JAMES ISOM | BROWN BELT
“BJJ offers an endless stream of growth opportunities. It’s the most humbling, yet confidence-building experience I’ve ever taken part in.”
James’ passion for teaching began in his position as a training coordinator for a local fire department. He found that people really respond to his way of explaining things - taking the complex and making it digestible. When he found jiu jitsu, he applied the same principles used in his career, combining deep study with clear and simple presentation. His first opportunity to instruct formally began at Relson Gracie in Cleveland as a purple belt. Now a brown belt, James feels honored that his students trust him with their jiu jitsu experience and loves the opportunity to be a small part in their efforts at self-improvement at Academy 440.
James has competed at every belt rank in several local competitions, as well as competing in a superfight at the Brown/Black belt level. His most recent podium was November of 2022, winning Silver in Gi Masters Brown/Black. James’ ultimate competition goal is to compete at the IBJJF Masters World Championship.
“The self confidence a person gains when they start training BJJ is the most incredible benefit of the sport, and there are many. I never take for granted the will it takes to just walk through the doors for the first time, because I remember when I did. Some of the transformations I’ve seen in people have been incredible, and inspiring. This sport is for everyone.”
